![]() ![]() ![]() When the cooperation started giant pandas were still listed as an endangered species by the IUCN. The aim was to increase the number of pandas in captive-breeding programs, however with the ultimate goal to return a larger number of pandas to their original, natural habitats. In June 1980, the Chinese government started its cooperation with the World Wide Fund for Nature and the "China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda" (CCRCGP) was established to ensure a future for the giant pandas. Īs one of the Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries, Wolong National Nature Reserve has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2006. Before the devastating 2008 Wenchuan earthquake Wolong received up to 200,000 visitors every year. The reserve is also a home to many other endangered species including: snow leopards, red pandas, golden monkeys, white-lipped deer and many precious plants. According to China's Third National Giant Panda Survey, Wolong National Nature Reserve houses about 150 wild giant pandas. There are over 4,000 different species recorded in the reserve. Wolong National Nature Reserve ( Chinese: 卧龙自然保护区), also officially known as Wolong Special Administrative Region ( Chinese: 卧龙特别行政区), is a protected area located in Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province, People's Republic of China.Įstablished in 1963 with an initial size of about 20,000 hectares, the reserve was further expanded in 1975, covering an area of about 200,000 hectares in the Qionglai Mountains region. ![]()
